Google Ads: answer the search, then deliver on the promise.

On Search, demand is already expressed. The challenge is separating someone who wants to buy from someone learning, applying for a job or comparing without acting.

Start here for an offer linked to specific searches. Search, Performance Max, Display and YouTube serve different uses: do not apply one test plan to all of them.

The journey to build
  1. NeedA person to help
  2. AdA verifiable promise
  3. PageA consistent answer
  4. ActionMeasurable success
  5. ContributionEconomics that work

Group searches expecting the same answer

For a sales-page audit, “landing page audit quote” and “website conversion consultant” may express commercial demand. “Landing page definition”, “free template” or “consultant jobs” express something else. Group one intent with an ad and page answering it.

Match types do more than reproduce exact strings: they can consider meaning. Starting with phrase or exact may make a small test easier to read, but you still need search-term reviews. Broad can be useful with coherent measurement and bidding; it is neither mandatory nor forbidden.

Negatives are a filter to maintain

Exclude genuinely irrelevant demand: jobs, internships or free where those requests do not fit. Check scope to avoid blocking good queries. Negatives do not automatically cover every close variant; review singulars, plurals and phrasing under the applicable rule.

Tell bidding which action matters

In Goals → Conversions, check the selected action, source, value and count setting. Primary actions can guide bidding when their goal is used; secondary actions normally serve observation. Exception: a custom goal can also use a secondary action. Review every campaign’s goals.

Page views or contact clicks can aid diagnosis, but should not be mixed casually with purchases or qualified leads. If the same sale is tracked by a Google Ads tag and Analytics import, avoid counting it twice in the outcome used. Test with Tag Assistant, then reconcile sales.

Keep control of scope

Check location options: presence and geographic interest differ. For a purely local service, consider presence and exclude unserved locations. Targeting is not perfect geolocation: inspect reports. Also check language, schedule, networks and average budget.

Start with a Search test whose queries, ads and destination you can explain. Performance Max combines inventories and automation: prepare conversions, values, assets, available exclusions and reporting before adding it. For YouTube or Display, adapt messaging and separate awareness, clicks and business impact; do not merely copy the Search budget.

The launch plan

The launch plan

  1. Choose commercial intent

List queries relevant to your offer and those outside scope. Estimate demand with Keyword Planner without treating forecasts as guarantees.

  2. Prepare the conversion action

Test the final action, configure value, currency and count, then verify campaign goals.

  3. Create a readable Search campaign

Separate brand and generic demand to read performance. Group keywords sharing the same answer page.

  4. Review every setting

Budget, bidding strategy, geography, presence options, languages, networks, dates and automation. Choose bidding compatible with measurement quality.

  5. Write consistent ads

Headlines and descriptions should remain true in permitted combinations. Add relevant assets and send visitors to the right offer.

  6. Read search terms

Filter irrelevant demand, check conversion lag and compare CPA, value and contribution before expanding.

Avoid

See mistakes before paying for them

Fictional examples. Corrections illustrate a method without guaranteeing an outcome.

Vague intent buying noise

Avoid

Broad keyword “coaching”; a page with all your services.

Why it blocks progress

Sport, career, training and jobs can mix. The ad and page do not provide a precise answer.

Build instead

A group dedicated to “professional public speaking coaching”, a service-specific ad, dedicated page and verified negatives.

What it changes

An intent and offer you can diagnose together.

Optimizing visits as sales

Avoid

Purchase, page view and menu click all included in the bidding goal.

Why it blocks progress

The system may favor an easy action while you read a conversion total without clear business value.

Build instead

Confirmed purchase or useful inquiry for the primary outcome; micro-actions for observation, with custom-goal checks.

What it changes

Conversions used have explicit business meaning.

A local campaign too broadly scoped

Avoid

A service in Saint-Denis, Réunion, with location and location-option settings never reviewed.

Why it blocks progress

A search mentioning an area may come from elsewhere; selecting an area alone does not prove presence.

Build instead

Actual service area, considered presence option, useful exclusions and geographic report checks.

What it changes

Geographic scope follows delivery capacity.

Read these indicators together

Search terms
Verify the intent consuming spend, beyond the purchased keyword.
CPA and value by intent
Read brand, non-brand and demand types separately after conversions mature.
Billable spend
Check applicable limits and budget changes. A daily average is not an identical daily ceiling.

Put it into practice

Your paid audit receives mainly clicks for “free template” and “jobs”.

Should the first correction be a bid increase?

See the reasoning

No. Review intent, search terms and negative scope. Then check the ad and page for the commercial need. A higher bid cannot turn irrelevant searches into customers.

Frequently asked questions

Should I avoid every broad-match keyword?

No. Broad can support a coherent strategy with good conversion signals. A narrower initial scope may make a small first test easier to diagnose. Always monitor search terms and negatives.

Does a €10 daily budget cap every day at €10?

Not necessarily. For most Google campaigns, the budget is an average: the daily limit is generally twice the average and the monthly limit 30.4 times. Exceptions and budget changes affect these rules; verify applicable settings.
